Dallas Cowboys Owner Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Offensive Signal at Spectators

The National Football League has levied a substantial $250,000 fine on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for an action he claims was an “unintentional” obscene gesture made toward attendees during a recent game at the Jets’ stadium.

Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he maintains he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team secured a decisive win.

“It was unfortunate. It was essentially an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”

He further emphasized that the signal was completely unintentional, happening amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I just showed the incorrect digit,” he noted. “It was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. Should you call it unplanned, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”

League Precedent for Owner Fines

This incident isn’t the first time an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Previous cases involve:

  • Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
  • Then Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.

Jones, who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an estimated net worth of around $16bn, so the penalty easily payable for the billionaire owner.

Offseason Issues and Public Attention

This event follows a controversial preseason for Jones, who faced widespread criticism from the Cowboys fanbase after the team traded key pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a central subject in a streaming series that examined his influence in developing the Dallas franchise into the globe’s highest-worth athletic organization, despite its recent title shortcomings.

The NFL’s action to penalize Jones highlights its ongoing initiative to uphold proper behavior among all team officials, irrespective of their position or wealth.
