The White House disclosed the initiation of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, making good on prior threats linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s process for letting employees go.

Although Vought did not specify which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that notices had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that layoffs would take place at the CISA. Also, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by the public and pledged to contest the moves in the legal system.

This is shameful that the administration has used the funding lapse as an excuse to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who deliver critical services to communities nationwide,” said a national union president, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the announcement, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have refused to support a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is not expected to be resolved soon.

During a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized Senate Democrats for rejecting the Republican proposal, which passed in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.
